From ArticleWorld

Linguistics is the study of human languages. Linguistics comprises many sub-fields such as language acquisition, phonetics, neurolinguistics, discourse analysis, psycholinguistics and morphology. Theoretical and methodological perspectives include a synchronic or diachronic, theoretical or applied approach.

Linguistics is often fraught with controversy. This is in some part because as societies and nations become more diverse and cross-border migration more common, fluency in a language can carry with it connotations of membership in a group or privilege in terms of nationality, class, ethnicity, race, and even gender. The work of linguists is thus often the site of sociological debate, and coopted to political ends.
