HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a retrovirus that affects essential elements of the human immune system. It leads to a disease called AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) resulting from damages caused by HIV infection. Cells are attacked and damaged by the virus. This leads to a collapse in the immune system. Common diseases that develop while infected with HIV are cancer, acute renal failure, cardiomyopathy, dementia and encephalopathy.
