Essential oils are oils that are extracted from plants. Essential oils are water-hating or hydrophobic and contain aromatic compounds that may be useful for cosmetics and perfumes. Essential oils are so called not because of the necessity for them but because they are deemed to be the essence of the plants they are derived from. The extraction of essential oils was in the past done by the pressing of the plants. Today with the technology of distillation this process is much faster.
