Dermatology is the study and practice of medicine that deals with diseases of the skin. Many dermatology specialists, or dermatologists, are generalists who help those with skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, warts and skin cancers. Some dermatological specialties perform surgery on patients who need lesions removed because of cosmetic or medical reasons or because they need the lesion biopsied. Other dermatologists use phototherapy to treat a skin condition or use laser to remove excess hair or certain types of birth marks. Dermatology specialists can be practicing doctors or researchers in the field.
