Calvin Klein was born Richard Klein to Jewish parents. His education consisted of going to The High School of Industrial Art and he went to college at The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Calvin Klein was not the only fashion designer that grew up in the Bronx. Ralph Lauren also grew up in the Bronx. Calvin Klein became the toast of the New York Fashion scene when he was young.

The empire

In 1980, after Calvin Klein tried and dialed to break into the perfume market he joined the jeans craze and launched a successful line of jeans which was helped by a sexy jean ad pitched by Brooke Shields. Sexy jean ads became a signature of Calvin Klein. In addition he also started a boxer shorts and underwear collection for both men and women. Calvin Klein used actor Mark Walberg in his underwear ads that were on giant billboards in the 1990s. His underwear collection made him about seventy million dollars and it is called Calvins.
