Webmaster
From ArticleWorld
The webmaster (or webmistress for a female) is the one entitled to maintain a website by designing, writing content, developing or programming, marketing and maintaining it. They can alternatively be called admins, authors or owners of a site depending on the tasks they assume.
Description
More generally the webmaster can be defined as a business person selling products or services using the online medium. Depending on the website’s popularity, value and size the webmasters have different roles:
- For personal webpages the admin is usually in charge of all the designing, content writing and sometimes development of small scale applications. The hosting services usually offer facilities for such users by providing domains with the entire infrastructure already set up.
- On larger commercial sites the webmaster usually ceases to be the owner and does not traditionally involve in designing and content writing. Most likely he will be a hired person responsible for maintaining the site and for the additional developing required such as installing scripts and configuring existing ones. If the site is truly a successful one the webmaster can be nothing more than a supervisor monitoring the functioning of the web portal and giving expertise to his fellow employees.
No matter of the webmaster’s site, these core responsabilities will always remain: he will assign access rights, choose the design and will ease up the website’s navigation. Another common trait of the administrator is his availability to receive feedback from the users and using them in improving the site. Most sites usually offer at least one link to the administrator’s email usually on the “Contact us” page or in footer of the main page. The email address itself will usually be something like webmaster@domain.com or admin@domain.com.
