Washroom
From ArticleWorld
The Washroom is a special room that is usually used for washing one’s hands. The term itself can also be used to describe a toilet room or can be referred to as a restroom in American English. Sometimes public toilets will also be considered washrooms.
Public washrooms
In most countries the public washrooms, toilets and all such rooms are separated by sex, with a special facility for men and women. Pictograms are used to point out the right genre to enter the room. European washrooms were only labeled with “WC” on the door, thus causing confusion to non-Europeans and natives as well. A common problem appears in sex separated rooms because of transgender or androgynous people. They are usually the victims of harassment and malicious treatment because of other persons that consider them of opposite sex. The problem still remains to be discussed with the purpose of a general solution to be reached.
Modern washrooms
The washroom evolved and several breakthroughs in design and capabilities have been noticed. Most modern washrooms will have:
- A door less entry that is used mainly for hygienically safer locations. This is based on the fact that diseases will not be spread as easier if one touches the doors. The entrance to the actual facility is built as a labyrinth so that people can have their privacy. Another added plus is the fact that people outside the entrance can hear what is going on inside so it is harder to mug or hurt somebody inside without being heard. A common technique of robbing people was used in the past in public washrooms. The victims would be attacked while alone and nobody heard anything.
- Sensor operated fixtures. They are used in many appliances with the same purpose of stopping the spreading of diseases. They are also easier to maintain and provides the facility with economical solutions that will not waste anything from water to toilet paper.
A modern washroom can also be used, if adapted properly, as a changing room. The building of such public washrooms is common in beach areas. Often a washroom will also be equipped with a bench or similar accessory to allow the person to change in and out of a bath suit. Some facilities will also feature showers, some of them being sensor activated to avoid waste or resources.
