Toilet-related injury

From ArticleWorld

A toilet-related injury is just that. Injuries, and even deaths involving the toilet have occurred throughout history.

Types

Genital injuries are fairly common in young males, occurring when the toilet seat falls down during use. Drowning in small children is also possible. For adults, the most common injuries involve bruised, or broken, hips and tailbones. Slippery floors around the toilet can also contribute to injury, as well as the toilet itself collapsing under the weight of the user. Poorly maintained toilets, such as those with cracked plastic seats, or other worn parts, can cause pinch injuries. The old style, high flush, toilets occasionally came apart from the wall, causing injuries.

Famous toilet-related deaths

Although not directly caused by toilet malfunctions, there are several famous deaths where the victim was found on, or near a toilet.

  • - George II, of Great Britain, died on the toilet, of an aortic dissection.
  • - Amidst rumors of drug use, and possible overdose, film producer Don Simpson was found dead on the toilet.
  • - Elvis Presley was found dead in the bathroom. Rumors continue to this day regarding the true cause of death.
  • - Some believe that Catherine the Great died of a stroke, while on the toilet.
  • - Having put on a lot of weight, novelist Evelyn Waugh is reported to have died on the toilet, due to overall weakened health.

Urban legends

Many urban legends exist regarding the hazards of the toilet. Although many prove to be false, they endure through time.

  • - Due to the presence of Australia’s red-back spider, and they’re reputation for hiding under toilet seats, the presence of poisonous spiders has been a common urban legend.
  • - In large cities, tales often exist of super-sized rats coming up out of the sewer, and attacking people on the toilet.
  • - The exploding toilet is a common legend, due to the belief of flammable substances in the water.
  • - The use of vacuums, in the toilets of airplanes, has led to another source of urban legend regarding potential toilet-related injury.
