The theatrical producer is the one person that oversees the production of a theatre play. He/she is the one person that has the most power in producing and is usually helped by an entourage of people. The producer will oversee different aspects based on the theatre company that hired him.

Skills needed

A theatre producer needs many skills to be successful. First of all, he/she needs to have accounting skills. The budget used and the maintenance of all money is overseen by one chief accountant. The theatre producer will keep close contact with that person and needs to assess every report received by the accountant in order for the production to gain profit. If involved in a theatre company that plays on tours, the producer needs to research and chose what theatres to perform in. Assessment of the eventual competition is a must do together with looking out for the financial aspects of performing. Theatres will take a part of the money from tickets or will “loan” the space to the company. Negotiation is necessary and the theatre producer needs to find the best deal to suit his company’s needs. In some situations, the theatre producer will also be the man/woman financing the project. Several successful actors have become producers and are financing their own plays. Some producers are well known all around the world. Examples can be provided in Mel Brooks, Charles Frohman, David Geffen, Elia Kazan and many more.
