Street Hockey
From ArticleWorld
Street hockey, also called road hockey, ball hockey and dek hockey, is like ice hockey but played without skates. Street hockey is aptly named because it is more often than not played in a street. If the street is iced over, a puck will be used for play and players will wear boots. In dry conditions, players use a puck and wear athletic shoes or in-line skates. Goal nets designed for street hockey can be used but often players use whatever is handy as goal posts like rocks or tires. When streets are unavailable, players may use lacrosse boxes. This is a popular alternative because the turf conditions are the same, the playing field is wider and there are boards that encircle the box. One drawback to the lacrosse box, however, is that the goal nets are significantly smaller than the regular street hockey nets.
Terminology
In any neighborhood where street hockey is played, one will undoubtedly hear Car! being yelled. This generally means for players to get out of the street because ea car is coming. Game on follows once the car has passed. This is highlighted in the film Wayne's World when Wayne and Garth are playing street hockey. In Canada, yard sale refers to when two players drop the gloves and fight it out.
Leagues
Throughout the United States, Canada and the rest of the world, street hockey has made a name for itself. Because of its popularity, there are leagues dedicated to the sport. Played both indoors and out, players of these leagues can play against each other for trophies and championships. Play is usually on rinks that are used, also, by roller hockey leagues.
