From ArticleWorld

Sergey Mihailovich Brin was born in August 1973 in Moscow, Russia. Brin is best known as the co-founder of search engine giant, ‘Google’ along with partner Larry Page. Google has made Brin and Page the joint 16th Richest in Forbes magazines 400 list, with an estimated net worth of $11 billion apiece.

Early Life and Education

Brin was born and brought up in Moscow, Russia, but at the age of five his family emigrated to Palo Alto, where his father became professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland a position that he still holds today. From an early age Sergey Brin had a keen interest in mathematics and computer sciences. His burgeoning talent for computers was aided by his father purchasing him a Commodore 64 on his ninth birthday and nurtured at his Montessori school, a style of schooling that both co-founders claim to have contributed greatly to their individual and collective successes. After graduation, Sergey continued his passion for mathematics and computers by enrolling at the University of Maryland, College Park to study Computer Sciences and the previously mentioned Mathematics. Brin graduated with a high honours Bachelor of Science degree and was also awarded a fellowship from the National Science Foundation; this allowed him to continue his education and to get a masters in Computer Science from Stanford University. Sergey received his Masters ahead of schedule whilst already undertaking a P.H.D, a course he would not complete due to his involvement in Google.

Inventing the Search Engine

Whilst studying at Stanford, Brin began to research the notion of the search engine, creating papers on Data Mining and Pattern Extraction. It whilst studying here that he met future colleague and co-founder of Google Larry Page. Brin was assigned to show Larry Page around the university and immediately the two personalities clashed, initially taking a dislike toward each other. However the two soon found common ground with an interest on what was to become the Internet search engine. The pair co-authored a paper ‘The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine’, which was to become their blueprint for Google, and to this day remains one of the most accessed pieces in the Stanford library.

Enormous Wealth

Sergey Brin may be one of the richest men in the world, but he has remained inconspicuous to public and media gaze. He does not lead a lifestyle that suggests an enormous wealth, driving an environmentally friendly but otherwise inconspicuous Toyota Prius and still renting a two-bedroom flat. Sergey has remained close to his Russian roots, by frequently dining in the numerous Russian restaurants in the San Francisco area. He also maintains a passion for gymnastics and Roller Hockey, a game which is often played during breaks at the unconventional Google head office.
