September is defined as being the ninth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and has 30 days. Its name derives from the Latin “septem”, which means “seven”. This is because the month was the seventh in the Roman calendar until 153 BC.

Several important events take or took place in September:

  • In many countries, mainly located in the West, the school year starts during this month
  • The 19th of September is the International Talk Like a Pirate Day
  • The United States of America and Canada celebrate Labor Day during the first Monday in September while the first Sunday is the time when the “regata storica” is held in Venice
  • Japan has two important events during September: The Respect for the Aged Day (the third Monday of the month) and the Autumnal Equinox Day is also a National holiday
  • The United States of America hold the Grandparent’s Day on the next Sunday after Labor Day and the Patriot Day on September 11
  • Dates raging from September 21 and 24 mark the autumnal equinox, with the date differing based on the location of the region.
  • Two festivals that have names that imply other dates are held in September: in Germany the Oktoberfest and in China the August Moon festival.
  • The first Sunday of September also marks the celebration of Father’s Day in Australia.
