A pretzel is a type of popular snack food and it looks like a twisted knot. Pretzels are usually made from wheat flour that has yeast. Pretzel dough is first dipped in lye water before they are baked. And, pretzels are usually salted. But, there are unsalted pretzels.

History of the pretzel

There is not one answer as to where the pretzel got its start. It is claimed that the pretzel began in Germany. However, there is also a claim that pretzels began in France. Some claimed have pretzels begin in medieval times and as far back as Celtic times. It is also rumored that an Italian monk rewarded children with pretzels when they learned their studies and prayers. There are also different stories about how the pretzel got its shape. One legend claims that a baker that faced jail time was offered suspension of his sentence if he could make a piece of bread through which the sun could be seen at least three times. Another fable says that the shape of the pretzel has religious significance.

Varieties of pretzels

There are hard, soft, salted, and unsalted pretzels. Soft pretzels are sold at many sporting events and movie theatres. Soft pretzels are best eaten freshly baked and hot. They are German and Philadelphia. Hard pretzels are consumed as beer snacks and chocolate coved hard pretzels are popular around Christmastime. Pretzels can also be coated with strawberry, vanilla, and a chocolate candy. Also pretzels can be topped with yogurt.
