The term musical composition can be used to describe:
- the structure of a piece that includes music
- an original piece of music
- the creation of a new piece of music
Composing Music
People that compose music are called composers. Such a person needs to have a lot of musical knowledge and skills like writing musical notes, instrumentation and handling orchestration. The techniques used by composers are numerous. Some will create a new song that presents no repetitive sections. In other cases, one may compose music that has a chorus or a part of the song that is repeated. Some musical tunes may even be created on the spot. This is called improvisation and is a technique that is widely used in jazz music.
Instrumentation
When a composer decides to write a song he first needs to choose the instruments that will be used. Nowadays a musical composition writer is able to create a song for any combination of instruments. Group ensembles will represent such combinations. In this case, the composer will provide a musical composition for ensembles like a full orchestra, a wind ensemble or a special chamber group. A composer will write a solo when the music composition is intended towards only one instrument.
