How to set more than one default page in Internet Information Server

From ArticleWorld

As you are probably well aware, every web site has what is known as a home page. This page is the one that gets displayed when the address of the site itself is specified, but without giving any certain page to open. In other words, this is the default page.

However, there is somewhat of an inconsistency about this, both among web page creation software and web designers: how should this default page be named?

One way to make sure there is no problem with this is to simply be a dictator and choose only one. However, if those who have to write the content are not too computer-savvy to write HTML by themselves, their software may get in the way, so it may be better to be somewhat more flexible and allow the default page to have other names than default.htm. Here is how to do it with IIS.

Steps

For IIS 3.x:

  • Open the Internet Information Services Manager and go to WWW Service.
  • Go into the Directories tab, and in the Default Document box type a list of comma-separated names for the default page. For example:
index.htm,index.html,default.htm,default.html,home.htm,home.html

For IIS 4.0 and later:

  • Open the Microsoft Manager Console. Right click on the WWW service and click Properties to get to the WWW Service Master Properties box.
  • Go to the Documents tab and check Enable Default Document (if it is not already checked).
  • Click Add... to add default pages to the list.
