How to install the Azureus Bittorrent client

From ArticleWorld

Azureus is currently a widespread option for people choosing a Bittorrent client. Azureus is very configurable and has many features, making it a perfect option for people who need extensive options when managing their Bittorrent operations. Here is how to install it.

Installation

  1. Azureus is written in Java, so you will need to install the Java Runtime Environment, version 1.5 or newer. Get Java from http://java.com/en/index.jsp .
  2. Go to the Azureus homepage, http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ , download the latest version and install it. You should also get the Safepeer plugin from http://sourceforge.net/projects/safepeer .

Configuration

  1. Check Azureus' default ports. Many ISPs block the default Bittorrent ports (6881-6889), so Azureus uses only one, which can also be changed if your ISP blocks it. Any port between 49512 and 65535 should be safe to use.
  2. In the Transfer section from the Configuration area, check the speed settings. You probably want unlimited download speed, so set it to 0. Set the upload speed to a decent maximum considering your connection, but do not let it be unlimited: due to TCP/IP's limitations, this may result in a low performance.
  3. Choose a default download folder, too.

Notes

If you are behind a router, you will need port forwarding for Bittorrent to work properly. Check your router's configuration (and www.portforward.com for instructions), or contact your network administrator.

The Bittorrent network itself is completely legal, but double-check what you download: some files may be distributed illegally.
