House

From ArticleWorld

A House is a term used to define a structure that has a roof and walls and serves as living quarters for one or more families. It may be any structure forming an open, partially enclosed, or enclosed space, having a roof supported by columns, pillars, or walls and intended for shelter from wind, snow, rain, heat, cold, unwanted people and even wild animals. Further, a dwelling need not be based on a foundation and thus also includes any type of mobile home, recreational vehicle, boat or tent.

Kinds of houses

Houses come in all shapes and sizes and vary from one part of the world to the other. The basic kinds of houses are:

  1. a detached house: This is the most common type of dwelling. Although, houses offer the greatest amount of ownership and control they are the most expensive option.
  2. a semi detached house: Also known as town houses or terraced houses (Great Britain), these houses are individually owned but are attached to one another. They have two or three stories and generally have a small yard attached. Town houses are less expensive than detached houses but have much less privacy.
  3. condominiums: These are units clustered in condo complexes and share the common facilities as well as the cost of maintaining them. The main advantage of owning a condo is that they are less expensive than houses. Another advantage is that since the cost of maintenance is shared there is less individual work required for their upkeep.
  4. cooperatives: These are owned by shareholders who own shares in a corporation. The corporations hold title to the complex and the shareholders have the right to live in a particular unit.
  5. a block of flats: These are individual residential units usually on one floor of an apartment house with many such units.

Many people in England live in buildings which were once built for something other than a home. For example, Oats Houses, were not originally a building where people lived. They were part of farm buildings and were where hops (a plant from which beer is made) were laid out and dried.
