Other names
Hair conditioners are also called cream rinses. Hair conditioners are also called moisturizers.
Moisturizers hold moisture in the hair. Reconstructors penetrate hair to strengthen it. Acidifiers tighten the hair’s somewhat scaly surface. Detanglers coat hair with polymers. Thermal protectors protect hair from heat (from blow drying, etc.). Glossers cause chemicals that reflect light to bind to the hair surface. Oils help condition dry hair. Pack conditioners are very heavy and very thick and applied to hair for a long period of time in order to protect hair. Leave-in conditioners can be applied after washing and leave a thin layer of protection on the hair follicles. Ordinary conditioners combine aspects of all above conditioners for normal hair types and daily conditioning needs. Hold conditioners work to keep hair in the desired shape.
Use
Hair conditioners are used to improve the texture and appearance of human hair.
Hair conditioners are also used to improve the health of one’s scalp.
Properties
Hair conditioners are typically made up of 97 percent keratin (a protein). On its surface it has negatively-charged amino acids and for this reason many hair conditioners contain cationic surfactants. These don’t wash out all the way since their ends bind themselves to the keratin. They typically contain various oils or lubricants (like fatty acids, panthenol or dimethicone). Many also contain antistatic agents (to prevent static electricity) and sequestrants to help them work better in hard water. Some hair conditioners also contain preservatives to help them last better.
Suggested conditioner
One can make his or her own conditioner by mixing two tablespoons apple cider vinegar or lemon juice with eight ounces of water to use after shampooing. One should be able to notice a positive change in the appearance of the hair after the second wash.
