Gyros is a part of Greek cuisine and it is a type of meat. The meat used in making gyros is usually roasted on vertical rotisserie. Gyros are generally put in pita bread. In Greece, Gyros was once called don’er from its Turkish name which was doner kebab which translates to turning roast. It is claimed that Mexican tacos al pastor are very similar to Gyros.

There are many varieties of Gyros. The variations of gyros depend on which countries the gyros are being made in. The traditional way of making gyros comes from Greece. In Greece, the meat used for gyros is beef, pork, chicken, or lamb. It can also have a combination of any of those meats. Gyros can contain tomatoes and onions and a cucumber sauce made from yogurt. Some times, French fries are served as a side dish with gyros. Gyros are also made in the United States. In the United States, Gyros is made out of a combination of beef and lamb Chicken can be used in place of both beef and lamb. In addition, Gyros is served in pita bread with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and cucumber sauce. Gyros are typically served at diners and at Greek restaurants in the United States. Gyros are also popular in Australia. The Australian version of Gyros has a combination of chicken, beef, or lamb. The fillings for Gyros in Australia are lettuce, tomato, onion, cooked wheat which is called bulgur, and hummus. Sometimes, cheddar cheese is put on gyros but that is because of Australian tastes and not Greek tradition. It also is placed in pita bread that is toasted before it is served.
