Eye drop

From ArticleWorld

Eye drops are solutions which can be used to administrate medication directly into the eye. Eye drops, as their name says, are administered by dropping small quantities of solution into the eye.

Indications

Eye drops are used for various conditions. Depending on what they are used to treat, they can contain steroids, antihistamines, anti-inflammatory drugs (non-steroidal), parasympatholytics, beta receptor blockers, topical eye anesthetics etc.

Eye drops are not used only to administrate medication. They sometimes contain lubricating substances, used when the lachrymal glands are not performing as should, or various substances with aesthetic effect like anti-redness solutions.

Administration

Before administration, people should see their doctor and consult them regarding any other treatment they may follow or conditions (like allergies) they may have.

The doctor (or the patient itself) should pull the lower lid so as to form a pocket, and slowly drop the necessary amount of medicine into the eye. The administration procedure itself is very simple, but some precautions must be taken. The dropper must always be clean and should not touch any part of the eye. If more types of drops are administrated, the patient should wait at least five minutes between administrations so that the quantity of substance in the eye is not more tan the eyelid can stand, causing it to be washed away.
