Experimental music

From ArticleWorld

Any music that is against the norm for its respective genre and is a challenge to the notions of that genre is referred to as experimental music. This style of music will commonly created new genres or will alter the perception of a genre that it can effectively create new subgenres. Many times experimental music is the bridge between two genres and can become a mesh of the two.

Against the grain

Many experimental bands prefer to go against the normal perceptions and to see what their creativity and the thresh hold of the genre can withstand. They are commonly pioneers of the next step of music. Many times they find dead ends, but in many cases they force modern music to take a leap forward, so that it won’t have to take one back.

What is experimental

Experimental music can have so many possible definitions, for it is an undefined term in so many ways. Yet one must think that this undefined terminology is in itself a definition. Experimental is effectively the progress a style of music or genre goes through where there is a purpose and determination and the end result is unknown. It isn’t the goal that defines this music, the artist in many cases doesn’t care if the piece succeeds or fails only in the progression to this next step of the music itself.

Limitations

Where genres have certain boundaries as to what they are and this defines them, experimental is the base style that will test those boundaries to the limit. It will push the limitations of the genre and style to either expand these limitations or the effectively create an entirely new style. One good example is Nine Inch Nails. Not many bands have covered the areas that this band has and remained in the upper fields of their genre and in the public eye. They have covered Rock, Progressive, Metal, Industrial, and even New Wave, ambient, dark wave, and even classical (this is also including their bootleg material).

The end result

While the question is to how to define experimental, the end base focus should be if the road that experimental music puts us on is one that we want to take. Many people enjoy this style of music and that is what music is for. It is an expression through melody to share and have others enjoy. Experimental music does this and more.
