Collectible

From ArticleWorld

A collectible is an item made that is intended to be collected. This item may be made of a breakable material, such as porcelain or glass, or be made to represent something the collector is fond of, like die cast cars.

Types of collectibles

A 'collectible' is any item of interest that a person may have in a grouping, or that is manufactured item for people to collect. Many glass and porcelain manufacturers make items with collectors in mind. The collectible is usually related to something the collector enjoys, a job, a sport or hobby or is something beautiful in its own right. Some people collect natural objects such as rocks and insects, while other objects manufactured for utilitarian purposes, such as stamps and ashtrays. However, sometimes toys become collectibles, also. Some advertising incentives became more popular and valuable than the items they helped to sell.

Limited editions are one way an item can grow in value. Knowing that some collectibles will only be made for a certain amount of time, or in a specific limited number can raise the desirability of that item to collectors. The collectible may also be related to a TV, movie, or other famous person. The early versions of a product can become worth more money in the secondary market. In a mature market, collectibles rarely prove to be a spectacular investment. Occasionally a flaw or other anomaly in the product will make it more valuable. Rarity of the item may make the collectible worth more money, also.

Collectibles for everyone

Popular types of collectibles are many types of figurines, music boxes, dolls sports memorabilia, cigarette and baseball cards, decorative plates, scale models of trains and cars, and many other items. People collect what interests them so anything related to a person's interest, or that remind them of a happier time, may be a collectible. Sometimes collectibles are of great intrinsic value, and are used as investments. Other times people merely by what they like.
