Coca-Cola, or Coke, is a carbonated beverage produced by The Coca-Cola Company and is sold in restaurants, stores, and vending machines all over the world. Rights to Coca-Cola were bought by Asa Griggs Candler, an aggressive business man, who put Coke on the map as a soft drink leader.

Original Coca-Cola

John S. Permberton invented Coca-Cola after his home town, Fulton County (Atlanta, Georgia), passed prohibition laws banning alcohol. Coca-Cola has changed immensely since it originated in the late 19th century. It was first used as a patent medicine because it contained traceable cocaine extracts that supposedly helped ease head aches and cured dyspepsia, neurasthenia, and impotence. Along with the many other changes Coca-Cola has made, price is one of them. Coca-Cola was originally sold for five cents a glass at soda fountains. When Coca-Cola was first put on the market in 1886, only nine drinks were sold per day for nearly the entire first year.

Pemberton began selling the formula to different companies, and over the next few decades Coca-Cola had risen to one of the most popular drinks in America. Coca-Cola was first packaged in bottles in 1894, and the first cans came along in 1955.

Even after a century of success, Coca-Cola tried to change its formula in 1985. The new Coke was formulated to taste more like its leading soft drink rival: Pepsi, after taste tests proved consumers preferred the Pepsi taste. Even though consumers tended to like the taste of the new Coke, many were not happy with the Coca-Cola company "selling out" and many protests were made, causing Coca-Cola to return to their old formula. With their return they also changed the drink’s name: Coca-Cola Classic.

Coca-Cola now has added many new soft drink flavors to its repertoire, such as Diet Coke, Caffeine Free Diet Coke, Cherry Coke, Diet Cherry Coke, Coke and Diet Coke with Lemon and Lime, and the new Diet Coke with artificial sweetener and Coca-Cola Zero.
