Christmas pudding is a dessert that is usually served during the Christmas holidays in both Great Britain and Ireland. However, Christmas pudding started in England and it is commonly called plum pudding. However, Christmas pudding doesn’t need to have plums in it.

Basics of pudding

Many houses have their own Christmas pudding recipe that is handed down from family member to family member and from generation from generation. Christmas pudding is boiled or steamed by using cheesecloth. This type of pudding is loaded with nuts and dried fruit. It is usually dark in color because it has brandy or another type of alcohol such as beer or a sweet red wine. It is a tradition for all members of the family to stir the Christmas pudding while it is cooking. Christmas pudding is usually started five weeks before Christmas. A long time ago silver coins were put in the pudding and the coins went to the person who got them in their serving pg pudding. However, this tradition has been stopped because of safety reasons.

Served with the pudding

Christmas pudding can be served with some of the following ingredients:

  • Brandy
  • Butter Cream
  • Butter Rum
  • Lemon Cream
  • Custard
  • Caster Sugar

After the holidays

Christmas puddings keep well. Therefore, families make more than one batch of pudding and eat it during other holidays such as Easter. Some people eat the same pudding the Christmas after they made it. However, this practice isn’t recommended. Christmas pudding can be bought ready made and cooked. However, it is believed to be too rich today to eat after a huge holiday meal. But, there is at lease one person in the family who wants to have a properly cooked Christmas pudding for the celebration of Christmas.
