Cellulite

From ArticleWorld

Cellulite is the appearance of dimpling on the skin due to the irregular presence of subcutaneous fat that protrudes into the dermal layer of skin. It appears in many places on the skin, including the buttocks and the legs.

Etiology

Cellulite is seen in up to 98% of adult females and can occur in those who are of any weight or body type. It is related to the female hormones in some way because very few men ever develop it unless they have a testosterone-deficient state. Caucasian and Asian women are the most likely to develop this condition. Under the condition of estrogen dominance, fat below the skin protrudes in an irregular fashion into the deep dermal layer of the skin. It is not seen in girls before puberty.

Treatment

There are a number of ways that people have attempted to use in reducing the appearance of cellulite. Cosmetic products have not been shown to be helpful. Systemic supplements are also known to be of little value. Even liposuction, which removes subcutaneous fat, doesn’t remove the intradermal fat and therefore, cannot improve the appearance of cellulite. Fortunately, the presence of cellulite is not dangerous and is just a cosmetic issue.
