Teeth are hard, enamel-covered structures found in the mouths of many animals, including humans. The purpose of teeth is to break large chunks of food into smaller bits that can be more easily swallowed. Teeth vary in number and shape among the animal species. In humans, there are 32 permanent teeth that are of four separate types with each type providing a different function. Humans actually have two sets of teeth. The baby teeth erupt beginning at six months of age and are gradually replaced by permanent teeth starting around age six.
