Rheumatology is the medical subspecialty field that deals with the diseases of the joints, connective tissue and, in some cases, blood vessels and muscles. This includes a wide range of autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosis and scleroderma. Many blood vessel diseases that rheumatologists help are autoimmune in nature. These include polyarteritis nodosa and temporal arteritis. Rheumatologists also help those with degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis and infectious diseases like septic arthritis. Gout is a rheumatological disease caused by crystals of uric acid inflaming the joints.
