Princes (princess) have existed for thousands of years. Nowadays few people are still referred to as being princes. The term is usually linked with aristocracy. A prince is considered to be a member of the royal family, descendant of the king and queen. The first born prince is named king (or queen) when the rulers die. A prince can rule over a region called a principality.
