Podiatry is the study of the anatomy and pathophysiology of the foot. Podiatrists are professionals who treat those with foot problems. Problems of the foot can involve the bones and the ligaments, such as bunions, and flat feet. Podiatrists also deal with disorders of the skin and nails of the feet such as fungal toenail infections, athlete’s foot and calluses caused by excess pressure on the foot. Podiatrists specialize in the formation of orthotic devices made of plastic or rubber that support weakened areas of the foot.
