A planet can be defined as a large mass of accreted matter that orbits around a star. Those masses that are large enough to exhibit nuclear reactions are not considered planets but stars. There are presently nine planets listed in our solar system according to the International Astronomical Union (IAU). There is presently some debate on the actual amount of planets in our solar system with some astronomers believing the amount is greater and others that the amount is less.
