Pediatrics is the medical practice of caring for children from birth to approximately the ages of 18-20 years. Some pediatricians are generalists and take care of basically healthy children in an office-based setting, providing them with well child visits and immunizations. Other pediatricians deal with children with chronic or severe acute illnesses in varied settings. Neonatologists care for very small, premature or ill infants. Other sub-specialties include pediatric oncology (cancer patients), pediatric endocrinology (diabetes, growth problems, etc.) and pediatric surgical subspecialties.
