Nuclear safety is a combination of methods and procedures used to prevent (or deal with) nuclear accidents. These accidents can be divided in four categories:

• Civil nuclear accidents.
• Civil radiation accidents.
• Military nuclear accidents.
• Nuclear and radiation accidents.

For instance, the Tchernobyl atomic power plant which exploded in 1984 has contaminated the surrounding environment for thousands of years.
