Neurotrauma represents a large category of traumatic injuries to the brain, the spinal cord and to other major nerves. Brain injury from penetrating injuries, blunt trauma or excessive shaking in children often yield serious deficits in speech, motor function, intellect, coordination and sometimes cause epilepsy. Spinal trauma due to auto accidents, diving accidents or gunshot injuries can lead to quadriplegia if the level of spinal injury is above the first thoracic vertebra. Injuries to the thoracic or lumbar vertebra often result in paraplegia or the inability to move one’s legs.
