Medical pumps are medical equipment that use pumping action to deliver substances to a patient, remove substances from a person or to provide complete pumping action of the heart (and the diffusion of the lung) to patients in cardiac surgery. A cardiac pump is one in which blood is circulated and oxygenated in surgery while the patient’s own heart is stopped. Infusion pumps can deliver large volumes of fluid to a patient or small amounts of fluid or medicine to a patient. An insulin pump is an example of a low-flow pump.
