From ArticleWorld

The lower limb or “leg” in humans is one of the two extremities used for ambulation. The hallmarks of the anatomic features of the lower limb are the strength of its muscles and the supportive structures of its joints. Because the legs must hold up the entire body and must participate in the steady locomotion of the body, the muscles must be extremely powerful. In addition, because the legs must adapt to external events that threaten the ability to stand and ambulate, the joints are protected by many small ligaments.
