The gustatory system is the body system involved with the sensation of taste. The components of the gustatory system are the taste buds which reside on the papillae which project from the surface of the tongue, along with the nerves that transmit the taste signal to the brain. The gustatory system is now known to have five specific tastes it detects, although research is being done which may add a sixth specific taste. The taste sensations recognized now are that of sour, bitter, salty, sweet and savory.
