GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is still the only fully-functional satellite navigation system (until Galileo). GPS was first named NAVSTAR GPS and was developed by the US Department of Defense. Nowadays the network controling the system brings in maintenance fees of around 400 million dollars per year. Despite high maintenance costs, the GPS became free to the public and is featured in many applications from car to mobile phones.
