The foot is the most terminal appendage of the distal leg. In humans it is flattened on the bottom with a wide fleshy area supported by bones that is designed to sustain a stable stance and to maintain the ability to remain upright during ambulation. The most distal end of the foot has five toes, of which the “big toe” is the most necessary for maintaining an adequate stance and for walking normally. The foot can flex and extend for smooth ambulation and can invert or evert (turn inward or outward) if necessary.
