From ArticleWorld

Flatulence is a bodily process that results in the expulsion of gases inside the colon to the outside via the anus. The gas itself, called flatus, is made up of several gaseous substances from two primary sources. Up to 90% of flatus consists of air that is swallowed in the act of eating and that is carried through the digestive system until expulsion. The remaining gases are variable and are the result of the metabolism of previously undigested food matter that, when metabolized by colonic bacteria, form a gaseous substance as a byproduct.
