Earth science is a general term used to refer to any studies being carried out in areas of knowledge related to the planet Earth. There are two ways of dealing with this form of research. It can be approached in a reductionist manner, in which complex things can be analysed in terms of their simpler constituents. Another way of approaching this science is in a holistic manner, in which functional relations between the constituents and the whole entity are given particular emphasis.
