Bees are flying insects related to wasps and ants that have stingers containing bee venom that is designed to protect the colony from other offending bees. The fact that bees sting humans is not actually what the stinger was intended for. Only the female worker bees contain stingers. When they sting a human, a localized histamine reaction occurs when the venom is injected. This causes redness, a raised wheal formation and an itching sensation. A person allergic to bees develops a generalized and sometimes fatal systemic response to the venom.
