An astronaut is a person that is trained to make rocket flights in outer space. Certain places vary, but in the United States, if someone flies above an altitude of 50 miles (80 kilometers). Astronauts are also known as causmonauts, spationaut, or taikonauts. There are both male and female astronauts, and they come from many different countries. Astronauts often begin their career as jet fighter pilots or test pilots, and are often in the military.
