Breast self-examination
From ArticleWorld
Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer affecting women in the developed world, affecting over 30% of women in America alone. If detected in the early stages, however, chances of it being treated successfully are very good. Women are therefore encouraged to examine their breasts at least once a month themselves at home.
Steps to take
There are a number of steps women should take including:
- Standing in front of a mirror, look for dimpling, swelling, soreness or redness in the breast. Do this once with hands on hips and again with arms raised above the head.
- Then palpate the breast, feeling for lumps. Do this twice, once while standing and again while lying down.
- Check the nipple by squeezing gently and checking for discharge.
Timing
The timing of the examination varies according to the woman's age. Premenopausal women are recommended to examine their breasts at the end of their period when swelling and tenderness are less likely. Menopausal women should carry out the examination on the same day of every month.
Most breast cancers are detected by women themselves which indicates how important BSE is. BSE cannot detect all types of breast cancer however which is why women should also undergo a mammography once a year.
