Who is the best man?
The best man is usually the bridegroom’s closest male friend, or a close sibling or family member.
The role of the best man
In the typical American or British wedding ceremony, a best many usually (with the assistance of groomsmen):
- Plans details of the wedding (coordinates suits, fittings, etc.).
- Plans the bachelor party.
- Preparing the groom on the day of the wedding.
- Managing the groomsmen and keeping both the groomsmen and the groom organized.
- Holding the rings during the ceremony.
- Witnessing the signing of the marriage certificate.
- Giving a speech, often humorous, at the wedding reception in honor of the couple.
- Keeping the men’s room stocked with essentials during the reception.
- Guide the groomsmen in escorting guests to their seats.
- Decorate the getaway car.
It is also always a good idea to offer to do any extras that may ease the stress of the couple of honor. For example, the best man should offer to pick up out-of-town guests (or helping arrange for their transport).
The best woman
If the groom wishes to honor a best female friend or female family member as his “best man” she may be termed a best woman, or best person. “Honor attendant” is used as a neutral term.
The best man, elsewhere
In Uganda, a best man performs the above duties, but part of his role involves guiding the couple in the ways of marriage. For this reason, the best man is expected to be married. He is expected to be discreet in his counseling and give tried and tested advice.
