A bagel is a bread product that is made from wheat dough with a touch of yeast. Bagels at one point were thought only to be a part of Jewish cuisine. Bagels can come in a variety of flavors. A bagel is used today as part of a sandwich.

History of the bagel

The bagel came from Europe, namely Poland. It is claimed that in 15th century Poland a bagel was given to mothers after childbirth as part of a celebration. Some people say that the bagel got its start in Vienna Austria where a Jewish baker baked created it as a gift for the King of Poland because he had defeated the Turks.

Bagel flavors

There are many flavors of bagels. Here are some of the flavors:

  • Plain
  • Egg
  • Garlic
  • Pumpernickel
  • Cinnamon-raisin
  • Cheese
  • Blueberry
  • Chocolate chip

In addition to these bagel flavors, sometimes green bagels are made in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.

Food and the modern bagel

Today, there are many kinds of bagel sandwiches. A popular dish that is part of Jewish cuisine is to have a bagel topped with cream cheese, lox, and tomatoes for a Saturday or Sunday brunch. Some people put onions on bagels. Meat, eggs, and cheese can also be put on bagels. Some people have placed peanut butter on a bagel and eaten it as a snack. A poplar dinner or lunch item is the pizza bagel. In the morning apple butter is used on a bagel as well.
