Audio engineering is an audio science that involves the reproduction and recording of sound using mechanical and electrical methods.

Practical use

Audio engineering, unlike acoustical engineering, does not involve working with noise control and the acoustic design of studios, rooms or venues. In many cases audio engineering is used as a part of broadcast engineering.

Audio engineers can be found recording, editing, manipulating, mixing and mastering sound using technical methodology. They’re often involved in a wide range of uses, like video and film post production, advertising, broadcasting and multi-media productions.

They manage and operate mixing boards, microphones, signal processors, recording machines, workstations, software and speaker systems.

Professionals

Audio engineers are experienced and trained in producing and manipulating sound using mechanical means. At times, this person is referred to as a sound engineer in a professional capacity. Audio engineers and sound engineers are often listed in the credits of productions that include sound, like musical recordings or movies.

Practitioners typically are well-versed in the design, installation and operation of sound systems, including but not limited to recording devices, sound reinforcement and sound broadcasting equipment. In a recording studio they are responsible of bringing a record producers’ creative input to life.

The role of an audio engineer is often closely connected to that of a producer. In fact, in typical sound reinforcement uses, they often assume that role; making both artistic and technical decisions.
