1926 is best known as the year in which a major strike was held in Great Britain. It quickly led to martial law being forced upon the people and it became even more serious when other working class organizations joined as support for the groups that started it. The most important birth of the year is that of Marilyn Monroe.

Important events

  • The year started with January 1st marking two important events: Turkey started using the Gregorian calendar because of the reforms done by Kamal Ataturk and 2RN became the first radio service to broadcast in Ireland.
  • March 6 – A devastating fire hit the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, located in the writer’s birth place, Stratford-Upon-Avon, completely destroying it.
  • Later on the same year, on April 7, an assassination attempt on the life of Mussolini was recorded. It was not successful. Later on the same year, on the 1st of August another assassination attempt, this time against Miguel Primo de Rivera also failed.
  • April 16 – 178 people die in San Jose, Costa Rica, because of a train crash.
  • On the 1st of May a general coal miner strike began in Great Britain. Only two days later a general strike hit the country as a sign of support with the event on the first day of May. On the 10th talks started between representatives of the government and of the workers. They ended on the 12th of the same month with the strike being called off. Negotiations actually started on August 18 and ended on the 12th of the same month.
  • September 18 – 100 people died and huge destruction was recorded after a hurricane hit Miami, Florida. On October 20 another hurricane hit, this time the target was Cuba. 650 people died.
  • 27th of November – The Vesuvius volcano erupts.

  • Miles Davis, one of the most important American jazz singers ever was born on May 26.
  • June 1st – One of the most successful and controversial American actresses ever, Marilyn Monroe. She was going to shock the world with her sexuality and made film history.
  • July 16 – An American biologist named Irwin Rose, whom was going to receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. On November 20, André W. Scaly was born. He would later on win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
