1861 is mostly remembered in history because of the American Civil War events that started in it. Several important events from it have taken place including states seceding from US or the Union.

Important events

  • On the first day of the year Mexico City was captured by Benito Juarez.
  • Several American Civil War events took place: Florida (January 10), Louisiana (January 26), Texas (February 1) and Alabama (January 11) seceded from the United States with Georgia joining the confederacy (January 18). The Confederate States of America were formed on the 8th of February with Jefferson Davis elected as the president (one day later). He was to properly receive the title on February 18. On March 4 the new flag of the Confederate States of America was adopted. It was known as “The Stars and Bars”. The constitution of the Confederate States of America was adopted on March 4. The actual beginning of the war is known to be April 12. On March 11 the constitution of the Confederate States of America was adopted. Richmond was to become its capital on May 8. The first income tax was implemented because of the Civil War on August 5 and it was 3% of all income over 800 dollars.
  • February 28 – Colorado becomes a US territory.
  • October 24 – The first battleship finished being built and was delivered. Its name was HMS Warrior.
  • November 25 – A Tenement collapse caused 50 people to be buried in Edinburgh. Only 15 were saved.

  • May 7 - Indian writer Rabindranath Tagore, he would become a Nobel Prize laureate, died in 1941
  • June 20 – English biochemist Frederick Hopkins, whom was going to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, died in 1947
  • November 6 – Canadian Frederick Hopkins. He invented basketball and died in 1939.
  • December 20 – Slovenian painter Ivana Kobilca, died in 1926
