Weight training

Weight training is a form of strength training involving resistance. Weights of increasing amounts are lifted using many forms of exercises and target specific muscle groups. Weight lifting, though anaerobic in nature, has become more popular during aerobic forms of activity. Weight training and weight lifting are not the same things. Weight training can be used to increase one’s overall physical performance and health whereas weight lifting is a sport. Weight training can be broken down into three different types of exercises: isotonic, isometric and plyometric.

Isometric and isotonic exercise

In isometric weight training and exercise, neither the force applied to nor the length of the muscle changes. Muscles, during isometric exercises, are used to either push or pull weights. Any object may be used as a weight for this. Dumbbells, barbells, gallons of milk, books and soup cans are examples of weights. During isometric training, the muscles used hold and flex a static position. No movement of the weight occurs.

Plyometric exercise

Plyometric exercise and weight training enhance the stretch reflex of a muscle. Quick variation and alternation of lengthening and shortening the muscle against the resistance of a weight defines plyometrics. Plyometric exercises can increase the effectiveness of an athletes game – a pitcher’s release, a batter’s swing or a hurdler’s jump are specific examples.

Weight training exercises

Isolation exercises focus on one joint and muscle group whereas compound exercises involve working more than one muscle group and two or more joints. Compound exercises mimic real life situations more readily than isolation exercises. Because of this, isolation exercises tend to feel awkward and unnatural.
